Lucette Bourdin is one of those delightfully refreshing moments in today's art world of complexities and affronts. That is a sentence and those of her paintings. Where so many strive for differences, oddities, and nonsensical uniqueness Lucette presents one with vibrant pastorals and genuine still lifes and buildings with organic fluid qualities. Trees and mountains of trading colors that we know, yet are surprised by. It jogs our visceral memories of what shrubs and leaves could be and perhaps are. We explore down paths and deeper and more mystical than when we are just out walking. We see in mirrors and through glass of what could be if it if we could just view through melted golds and greens. Horses in serene pastures, houses in villages and night times of reds and purples, all a glow. Not picture postcards.

From her home and rural eastern France near the Doubs river her memories come here to Southern California where she has lived for the past 23 years. Self-taught, she is found her way. There is an honesty in her work that is seen as natural as she is. Yet we all know what is viewed as a purple is in reality quite blue. Or is it green? It a pleasant surprise to have it both ways and to know that it works. It is a form of transportation, where we the viewer can travel along a path that someone has set. Perhaps a simple journey, perhaps complex. But we are transported away from ourselves and away from what we know is factual and isn't that what art is about?
